For added data
protection, Kurlo periodically backs up the Kurlo data files.
This backup is performed:
- When Kurlo
successfully starts up
- When Kurlo
successfully shuts down
- Every 20 minutes
while Kurlo is running
This backup process is
performed behind the scenes. It will not interrupt your work.
In the unlikely event
your Kurlo data files become damaged, these backup files can be
used to restore the Kurlo data files to their state as of the last time the backup
was performed. Changes entered after the last backup will
be lost.

Manual data backup
top
We recommend you
frequently backup your Kurlo data using one of the two methods below:
- To backup a specific
user, create a user backup file (UBF) and store it in a safe place
- To backup all users,
copy the Kurlo data files and store them in a safe place
Both of these methods
are explained in detail below.

How to create
and install a user backup
file (UBF)
top
A user backup file (UBF) backs up
ALL data for a user. This includes everything from address books and contacts to
email messages and user preferences. It is important to understand that a UBF
doesn't backup data for all users but only for the user you create it for.
To create a UBF:
Open the Create User Backup File dialog by clicking the menu "File" then selecting "Create
User Backup File...".
The information needed to create a UBF is the directory to store the UBF and the
UBF name. Click the "Select Directory..." button to open the Directory Chooser
dialog. This dialog allows you to select the directory you want to store the UBF.
After selecting the directory, enter the UBF's name. The default name is the
user's name although you can enter any name you would like. After selecting the
directory and entering the UBF's name, click the "Create UBF " button. This
begins the process of creating the UBF which should take only a few seconds at
most. A dialog will notify you of the success or failure of the UBF creation
process. If successful, you have backed up all data for the current user.
Failure is rare and is usually because the drive that contains the directory you
selected doesn't have enough space to store the UBF.
To install a UBF:
Open the Install User Backup File
dialog by clicking the menu "File" then selecting "Install
User Backup File...".
Click the "Select UBF..." button to open the UBF
Chooser dialog. This dialog allows you to navigate to the UBF you wish to
install. After selecting the UBF to install, click the "Next >" button. The next
dialog depends on if the user contained in the UBF already exists or not. Below
explains both situations.
If the user already exists:
The dialog you will see allows you to either replace the current user with
the UBF or to install the UBF under a different user name. If you choose to
replace the current user with the UBF, the current user's data will be wiped out
and will be replaced with the backup data contained in the UBF. For this option,
you must be logged in as the user you wish to replace. If you choose to install
the UBF under a new user name, you must also enter the name of the new user. All
backup data contained in the UBF will be added to the new user and the existing
user's data will be unchanged.
Click the "Install UBF" button to begin installing the UBF. This
will take a few seconds at most. A dialog will notify you of the success or
failure of the UBF installation process. A successful installation for replacing
a user with the UBF will automatically update the user's data. If the password
contained in the UBF is different than the password for the user, you will be
asked to log in again. A successful installation for installing the UBF under a
new user name will add the user to Kurlo. You can now log in as the new
user. A failed installation is rare and is a result of a damaged UBF.
If the user doesn't exist:
The dialog you will see allows you to review the name and date the UBF was
created. Click the "Install Now" button to begin installing the UBF. This will
take a few seconds at most. A dialog will notify you of the success or failure
of the UBF installation process. A successful UBF installation will add the user
to Kurlo. You can now log in as the new user. A failed installation is rare
and is a result of a damaged UBF.

To
backup and restore the Kurlo data files
top
The Kurlo backup files are in the backup directory located in the Kurlo
installation directory. The default path to the backup directory is C:\Program
Files\Kurlo\backup.
To backup the Kurlo
data files:
- Make sure Kurlo is
not running and that it was shutdown properly the last time it was
run. If the backup is perfomed while Kurlo is running or after an
improper shutdown, the backup files may not contain the most
recent data.
- Copy all 3 files (pack.properties,
pack.script, pack.backup) from the "backup" directory located in
the Kurlo installation directory and store them in a safe place.
That's it. You have successfully
backed up the Kurlo data files.
Where you store the
backup files is up to you. Here are a few options:
- burn them to a
cd
- copy them to an
external storage device such as a USB flash drive or mp3 player
- upload them to
an online storage website such as
Yahoo!
Briefcase
To restore the Kurlo data files:
- Make sure Kurlo is not running.
- Locate and copy your
backup files (pack.properties, pack.script, pack.backup).
- Go to the "classes"
directory located in the Kurlo installation directory and delete
the 4-6 files that begin with "pack"
- Paste the backup
files to the "classes" directory
That's it. You have successfully
restored the Kurlo data files.
